Courses for aspiring photographers.

At Shutter School, we run inspiring photography courses for young people, helping them develop real camera skills, creative confidence, and a deeper understanding of light, composition and storytelling — all in a supportive and encouraging environment.

Our photography courses for teens and young people take place across Surrey, including Cobham, Epsom, Guildford and surrounding areas, and they often sell out quickly. £230.00

3-Day Photography Course for young people 10-16 years

Whether your young person has just picked up a camera or wants to gain confidence shooting in manual mode, this course covers all the essentials. Working with digital SLR cameras, we will school your child on all the technical aspects of photography to get them off automatic and get them learning how to use a camera properly. We will show them how to create great photos through composition and the use of different elements of the exposure angles. Located in a private school in Surrey, we are free to roam the grounds and use them to take interesting photos in a lovely rural setting.

The course is fun and relaxed, with breaks and time to experiment.

Location: Private school in Bookham, Surrey

WHAT OUR STUDENTS ARE SAYING

“My 13-year-old daughter loved The Shutter School’s summer photography course. She learned how to confidently use a DSLR and edit her photos, and it’s inspired her to keep experimenting long after the course ended. I’d highly recommend it to any child interested in photography.”

  • We’ll have a few cameras available to share within the group. However, to get the most out of the course, we recommend hiring your own. We can guide you through the process—it’s straightforward, with cameras typically delivered to your door and returned via courier. The cost is around £60 per day (including insurance), depending on the model. Please note, it is not compulsory.

  • Yes, absolutely. Just email us and we will help once you book the course.

  • An SD card would be most useful so you can keep the photos you take. However, any photos taken of any of the group during the course would require a model release for you to use them or keep them. Otherwise we will have to delete them.

  • We will start at 10am and finish at 3pm. All children will need a packed lunch and snacks and drinks for the day. The course will be a mix of theory and practical, with lots of time to apply their learnings on a practical basis.

  • As the course is designed to teach the process of photography to a finished art form, then yes, all three days are required.

  • As long as model release forms are signed for any pictures of identifiable people then yes. All pictures of nature or abstract/landscape you can keep.
